Wishing you a terrific holiday season and hope you are able to get some time to relax before 2025 kicks off in just a few days.
Below are a few of my favorite things on health, books, and podcasts that you might find interesting to check out.
Health
Parallette Push ups with Plyo Box. Looking for a way to change up the standard push-up, I saw calisthenics fitness influencer K Boges using the gymnast tool, “parallettes,” in his outdoor gym (in the video below at minute 1:06) and have been hooked for the last few months. There is a much greater range of motion than doing the standard push up, and less friction. My favorite routine taken from his pull-up mastery schedule is 3x/week (3x sets to failure, 10x sets at 50% max reps with 1 min rest in between, and 5x sets of ascending ladders).
Book
The Wit & Wisdom of Lee Kuan Yew. Lee Kuan Yew, often known by his initials, “LKY,” is the founder of modern Singapore. Born in 1923 in Singapore under British colonial rule and educated in England as a lawyer, LKY lived under the brutal Japanese occupation of Singapore from 1942-1945 and later served as Singapore’s first prime minister from 1959 to 1990, and later Minister Mentor to 2014, passing away in 2015. He is credited to transforming Singapore into one of the most prosperous countries in the world. The book lists numerous quotations from speeches he gave on a wide variety of topics.
Podcast
How I Built This: Athletic Brewing Company Bill Shufelt. An entrepreneur friend of mine shared this podcast, and it is packed with insight as to how Athletic Brewing Company started with a product that had no market to changing the beer industry forever. Before Athletic Brewing Co. came along, it was taboo to order a non-alcoholic beer in social outings, and the options were limited and just not that good. Market research surveys showed that half of people said they would drink a non-alcoholic beer if there were good options. Enter Bill Shufelt, the founder who came up with the solution for good tasting non-alcoholic beer. Heineken Zero, Budweiser Zero, Corona Non-Alcoholic - in just the last few years all major brewers now sell non-alcoholic beers. Founded in 2017, Athletic Brewing Co. has increased its market capitalization from $500M in 2022 to $800M in 2024, and its founder thinks that the non-alcoholic beer market could makeup 50% of all the beer sold in the future.
Finished a long run or heavy weights workout and want to drink something refreshing without damaging your exercise benefits? Drink an Athletic Brew beer.
